For Schools

Help your students arrive to school safely with our free events.

About the Program

The Safe Routes to School program encourages students to walk and bike to school and supports these activities with educational events throughout the year. The program brings together city planners, traffic engineers, police and public health experts to make the routes to our schools safer and less congested. Parents are encouraged to get involved by volunteering for a walking school bus or bicycle train and helping out with an educational event. The goals of the program are to:

  • Increase the number of children who walk and bike to school
  • Reduce traffic congestion and air pollution around the school
  • Improve children’s health by increasing physical activity

Free Program Events

Bike Rodeos
Bike Rodeos are fun training courses that teach kids bike riding and safety skills, while having a great time! They take place at the school and require 8 to 10 volunteers for 1 to 2 hours.

Walk and Roll Events
Walk and Roll Week is an encouragement program, including a one-day walk and bike event which requires 4 to 5 volunteers to observe and award prizes to students demonstrating safe and appropriate walking and riding to school behaviors.

Safety Assemblies
Traffic Safety Assemblies educate students about how to walk and ride to school safely. Students are separated by grade levels, each attending a 45 to 60 minute presentation.

Check the Upcoming Events Calendar for events at your school.

2012/13 Student Travel Surveys

Twice a year, the STA compiles travel to school surveys conducted by teachers using the “National Safe Routes to School Student Arrival and Departure Tally Sheet”. Program participants are required to conduct these surveys.

Arrival and Departure Tally SheetFor just two days between Oct 23, 24, or 25, teachers take five minutes to ask their classes two questions:

  • “How did you arrive at school today?” (read out possible answers, tally raised hands)
  • “How do you plan to leave for home after school?” (read out possible answers, tally raised hands)
  • For high schools, please conduct this survey in a method that reaches all students (e.g., Will C. Wood HS distributes information in English classes that all students are required to take).

Download "Survey Tips for Teachers" for answers to frequently asked questions regarding these surveys.

The more information that the STA has about your school, the more competitive your school will be for grant funds. Please send these surveys either through email to dcarey@sta-snci.com with the subject line "SR2S Survey (School name)" or mail them to:

2012/13 New Parent Travel Survey

In addition to student tallies, we encourage parents/caregivers to participate in our parent survey. With your feedback we can determine what existing and future programs/activities will be most effective at increasing walking, biking, and carpooling to your school.

Please help us evaluate and improve the program by taking 10 minutes to complete a parent survey. Only one survey per family is needed and all responses will be kept confidential.
